Lady Royals Outmatch Lady Vikings 3-2

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity softball team (8-3) saw its four game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday night, August 30, falling to the Bleckley County Lady Royals (8-2) 3-2 at the FPD Softball Complex.

With FPD leading 2-1 and one out in the top of the seventh inning, the Lady Royals pushed across two runs on Lady Viking errors and held FPD in the bottom half to secure the come-from-behind victory.

“We just didn’t play well defensively,” FPD head coach Kristy Alvarez said. “We can’t afford to do that against a solid and gritty team like Bleckley County. In the end they made us pay for it.”

The Lady Vikings led 2-0 at the end of the first inning.

Emily Rutledge scored on a wild pitch followed by an Amanda Evans run from stealing home.

“We got out to a good lead early,” Alvarez said. “But that’s all we could manage. We didn’t hit well tonight and, coupled with our mistakes, it cost us the game.”

The Lady Royals cut FPD’s lead in half in the fifth inning when Faith Harris crossed home on a Lady Vikings infield error.

Still, the Lady Vikings had the lead and a chance to close out the game in the seventh inning.

After a strikeout by Bleckley’s Riley Edge, Taylor Dykes doubled and Aliyah Whitehead bunted safely aboard. But the throw to first was wild, allowing Dykes to score and tie the game at 2-2.

Two batters later with two outs, Hannah Coulter reached on another FPD infield error to allow Whitehead to score to make it a 3-2 Lady Royal lead.

FPD would get a walk from Rutledge in the bottom of the seventh, but could do no more.

Bleckley’s Bailey Odom picked up the win in the circle for the Lady Royals. The southpaw tossed all seven innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out four.

FPD’s Karsen Ochs (6-1), who struck out 13 batters, was tacked with her first loss of the season.

The Lady Vikings will look to reverse Tuesday’s loss on Thursday, Sept. 1, opening Region 7-A play against the Mount de Sales Lady Cavaliers.

First pitch is scheduled for 5:55 p.m. at the FPD Softball Complex.
