Softball Takes Region 7-A Opener Over Mount de Sales 8-5

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity softball team (9-3, 1-0 Reg. 7-A) opened Region 7-A play on Thursday night with an 8-5 victory over the Mount de Sales Academy Lady Cavaliers (3-8, 0-1 Reg. 7-A) at the FPD Softball Complex.

Carli Sutton (3-2) picked up the win in the circle for the Lady Vikings with a magnificent performance.

The senior totaled 14 strikeouts and allowed no walks while scattering 10 hits.

FPD jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first inning.

After a Karsen Ochs single, Emily Rutledge laid down a sacrifice bunt. The throw to first by Haley Hatcher sailed into the right field corner allowing both players to score to make it 2-0 FPD.

Later in the inning, Sutton helped her own cause with an RBI single that plated Cardin Weaver (courtesy running for Allie Parkerson) to make it 3-0 Lady Vikings.

Amanda Evans would later steal home followed by a Jordan Fischer RBI single to score Cassie Sutton (courtesy running for Carli Sutton) to give the Lady Vikings a 5-0 advantage.

The final run of the inning came via an Ochs double that plated Fischer for a 6-0 lead.

The Lady Cavaliers got on the board with one run in the fourth inning when Devon Fitzgibbons singled home Asia Laconico for a 6-1 score.

FPD added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth when Carli Sutton doubled home Abbey Surles for a 7-1 lead. Sutton would later score on a fielder’s choice for a commanding 8-1 advantage.

The Lady Cavaliers added four runs in the seventh in an attempt to rally, but Sutton slammed the door on the final batter, striking out Fitzgibbons to end the game.

FPD will have the Labor Day weekend off, returning to action on Tuesday, Sept. 6, hosting the Wilkinson County Lady Warriors in another Region 7-A contest.
