Sutton Tosses No-No, Parkerson Sets Record in 11-0 Region Win at Mount de Sales

MACON, Ga. – Seniors Carli Sutton and Allie Parkerson will never forget Sept. 15, 2016.

Sutton threw the tenth no-hitter in FPD fast-pitch program history and Parkerson broke the single season home run record (8) as the Lady Vikings (14-3, 5-0 Reg. 7-A) slashed the Mount de Sales Cavaliers (7-11, 1-4 Reg. 7-A) 11-0 in six innings at the Bayless Family Softball Field at Cavalier Fields on Thursday night.

The Lady Vikings jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Amanda Evans hit a fly ball to shallow right field that was dropped to score Whitey Sikes, who was courtesy running for Parkerson.

In the second inning, the Lady Vikings added another run for a 2-0 advantage when Katie Culver came across on a wild pitch by Lady Cavalier pitcher Erin Wallace.

After two scoreless frames, the Lady Viking bats came alive in the fifth, highlighted by the record-breaking two-run home run by Parkerson over the left field fence, her eighth of the season, to give FPD a 4-0 lead.

FPD added another run in the inning on an Abbey Surles single to bring in Amanda Evans for a 5-0 advantage.

In the sixth, FPD’s bats were even hotter.

The Lady Vikings sent nine batters to plate, scoring six runs with the highlight of the inning coming from Sutton, who blasted her first home run of the season, a two-run shot over the center field wall.

At the end of the frame, FPD led 11-0 and brought the run-rule into effect.

In the bottom of the sixth and needing three outs for a no-hitter, Sutton struck out pinch hitter Carson Edwards for the first out.

The Lady Cavaliers sent another pinch hitter to plate in Gracie Blackwell.

Sutton induced a fly-out to Surles at short for the second out, needing just one more for the no-no.

Asia Laconico was hit by Sutton and the next batter, Haley Hatcher, hit a ground ball to Sadie Frame who fielded and flipped the ball to Surles at second to force out Laconico for the no-hitter.

Sutton (5-2) totaled six strikeouts in the contest and walked none.

The last no-hitter thrown by a Lady Viking came in the 2015 season, when Peyton Worsham ironically no-hit Mount de Sales on Sept. 10 in a 15-0 victory at the FPD Softball Complex.

Parkerson’s eighth home run of the 2016 campaign surpasses Fran Johnson’s former record of seven, set back in the 2010 season.

The Lady Vikings are back in action quickly, traveling to Chattanooga, TN to play in a tournament hosted by Gordon Lee.

FPD will take on 2A Armuchee High School (Rome, Ga.) on Friday night, Sept. 16, at 9 p.m. followed by two games on Saturday, Sept. 17.
