Softball Opens Elite Eight with 8-2 Victory Over ELCA

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The FPD varsity softball team (28-5) came-from-behind on Thursday night to defeat defending state champion Eagles Landing Christian Academy Lady Chargers 8-2 in the teams’ first game of the GHSA Class-A Private Elite Eight at R.G. Jones Field at the South Commons Softball Complex.

The victory keeps the Lady Vikings, the no. 3 seed in the tournament, in the winner’s bracket and sets up a contest against Christian Heritage on Friday morning, Oct. 28.

FPD trailed 1-0 after ELCA’s Caris Wright singled home Lyndsey Darden.

But FPD tied the contest in the third inning when Amanda Evans smashed a double to left-center to plate Emily Rutledge.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Lady Viking bats came alive, outscoring the Lady Chargers 7-1 over the final three innings.

The Lady Vikings took the lead for good with a three-run fifth.

Caylee Ann Sutton reached base on a fielder’s choice to score Karsen Ochs and a throwing error then plated Rutledge, who was caught in a pickle between third and home, to give the Lady Vikings a 3-1 lead.

Later in the inning Katie Culver knocked in Caylee Ann Sutton on a single to make it a 4-1 FPD advantage.

ELCA responded with one run in the bottom of the fifth on a Palmer Pinholster double to bring in Darden for a 4-2 contest.

But in the top of the sixth, Evans slammed the door on the Chargers with a first-pitch-swinging three-run home run to right field to bring in Rutledge and Allie Parkerson for a 7-2 FPD lead.

The Lady Vikings added another insurance run in the seventh on a Sadie Frame ground out to plate Carli Sutton.

Carli Sutton (12-3) picked up the win in the circle for the Lady Vikings, tossing 4.2 innings and striking out five.

Karsen Ochs came in for relief in the fifth inning and threw 2.1 scoreless innings and struck out four.

Pinholster was tacked with the loss for the Lady Chargers despite striking out nine batters.
