Lady Vikings, Vikings Surge Past Tattnall Square Academy

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity girls and boys basketball teams picked up Region-7 victories on Tuesday night, knocking off the Tattnall Square Academy Lady Trojans and Trojans on the road at Richard Reid Court.

In the girls contest, the Lady Vikings (12-4, 4-1 Reg. 7, 1A) erased a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter by ending the contest on a 23-4 run over the final eight minutes to take a 50-41 victory over the Lady Trojans (10-7, 2-3 Reg. 7, 1A).

Kate Patterson netted a game-high 26 points, 15 coming in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Teammate Bailey Ruble added 15 on five made 3-pointers as well.

The Lady Vikings trailed 9-5 at the end of the first quarter and 21-15 at halftime.

The Lady Trojans outscored the Lady Vikings 16-12 in the third quarter to seemingly put the game away.

But the Lady Vikings clamped down on defense and Patterson and her teammates went to work in the final quarter.

McKenzie Sams paced the Lady Trojans in scoring with 15 points, all from beyond the arc.

Tuesday’s victory over the Lady Trojans is the first in the GHSA era for the Lady Vikings.

Patterson moved into seventh place on the all-time scoring list at FPD with her 26-point performance, passing Norma Williamson (1975-79) and Savannah Phillips (2011-14).

The senior is 32 points away from tying sixth place with Diane Graves (1976-80).

In the guys contest, the Vikings (9-5, 4-1 Reg. 7, 1A) held on for a 48-46 victory over the Trojans (10-5, 4-1 Reg. 7, 1A).

The Vikings led 9-6 at the end of the first quarter and 20-14 at intermission.

FPD pushed its lead to 31-24 at the end of third period before both teams traded blows in the final quarter.

The Vikings led 36-26 the first two minutes into the fourth quarter and 41-31 midway through the final frame, but the Trojans went on a 10-3 run to pull within three with 44.1 seconds to play.

The Trojans outscored the Vikings 5-4 over the remaining seconds, but it wasn’t enough to pull through.

Armaun Smith and Henry Middlebrooks paced the Vikings with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Jimmy Marshall led the Trojans with 19, including 13 in the second half, while teammate Calvin Slaughter pumped in 10 points.

With the win, the Vikings are now just one game down in the GHSA series again Tattnall with the Trojans holding a 3-2 lead.

The Lady Vikings and Vikings return to action on Friday, Jan. 20, traveling to Twiggs County High School for a Region-7 match-up against the Lady Cobras and Cobras.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. for the varsity girls followed by 7:30 p.m. for the varsity boys.
