Boys Hoops Downs Riverside Military 62-55 for First GHSA Playoff Win in Program History

MACON, Ga. – The no. 10 seeded FPD varsity boys basketball team (16-7) picked up its first ever GHSA Class-A Private State Tournament victory on Saturday, Feb. 18, defeating the no. 23 seeded Riverside Military Academy Eagles (9-14) 62-55 at Coach Mac’s Court at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center in the opening round of the state tournament.

Wesley Wilson led all scorers with a game-high 26 points to push FPD into the Sweet 16 at Athens Christian on Thursday, Feb. 23.

The Vikings trailed 20-16 at the end of the first quarter, but outscored the Eagles 30-16 over the middle frames en route to the victory.

The Eagles took the final quarter 19-16.

Along with Wilson, Armaun Smith and Titus Moore finished in double figures for the Vikings, scoring 13 and 10, respectively.

Four Eagles posted double-digits in the scoring column, with Khalid Duke netting 14. Trey Greene finished with 13 while Isaac Teasley and Darrell White knocked in 12 and 11.

Riverside was on fire from 3-point land, dialing in eight 3-pointers in the contest. The Vikings did not connect from long distance.

The Vikings attempted 28 free throws while the Eagles tried six times from the charity stripe. FPD made 16 of 28 from the line.

Thursday’s game time at Athens Christian, the no. 7 seed in the Class-A Private State Tournament, will be determined in the coming days.

Athens Christian earned a ‘bye’ in the first round.
