Boys Hoops Opens Region 7 Tournament with 54-48 Win v. Greene County

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The FPD varsity boys basketball team (14-6, 9-2 Reg. 7, 1A) started slow but finished strong en route to a 54-48 victory over the Greene County High School Tigers (13-12, 12-7 Reg. 7, 1A) on Wednesday night, Feb. 8, at Aquinas High School in the first round of the GHSA Class-A Region 7 Tournament.

The Tigers jumped out to a 13-10 lead by the end of the first quarter and never trailed in the first period.

In the second quarter, FPD took the lead briefly at 14-13, but Greene County closed out the quarter on a 15-12 run to take a 28-26 halftime lead.

The Viking offense rose to the occasion in the second half, outscoring the Tigers 28-20 for the victory.

FPD won the third quarter 10-7 and took the final eight minutes 18-13.

Maurice Gordon led the Vikings with 12 points, eight of which came in the second half.

Henry Middlebrooks, Jacobe Singletary and Armaun Smith each totaled eight points as well.

The Tigers were led by a game-high 14 points from Anton Kilpatrick. Teammate Danahj Wright finished with 11 points.

The Vikings, the no. 2 seed from the western division in Region-7, advance to the semifinal round on Friday, Feb. 10, at Stratford Academy.

FPD will take on the Aquinas Fighting Irish, the no. 1 seed from the eastern division, at 5:30 p.m. at The Grady Smith Gymnasium.

Aquinas knocked off Twiggs County (#4 West) 66-44 on Wednesday night to advance to the semifinals.

FPD, winners of three straight, now leads the all-time series against Greene County 1-0.
