Vikings Upset Wilkinson County Warriors 63-62 in Region 7 Consolation

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity boys basketball team (15-7) shocked the Wilkinson County Warriors (21-7) in Saturday’s GHSA Region 7/1A Consolation game with a 63-62 victory to take third place for the tournament at Stratford’s Grady Smith Gymnasium.

Armaun Smith drove to the basket and made a lay-up through heavy traffic with 3.4 seconds to play to give the Vikings the win.

The victory is the first for the Vikings against the Warriors in program history in 11 attempts.

FPD led 16-14 at the end of the first quarter. Both squads battled to a 12-12 second quarter and the Vikings took a 28-26 lead into halftime.

Both offenses fired on all cylinders in the third period, each netting 17 points. The Warriors outscored the Vikings by one in the fourth period 19-18, but it proved too little in the end.

FPD pushed its lead to 51-46 early in the fourth quarter and kept the lead for much of the period until Aaron Geter III hit a 3-pointer, followed by a timeout. Tylan Grable then connected on a three-point play to give the Warriors a 62-61 lead with just over 19 seconds remaining.

The Vikings marched the ball down the floor and Smith went isolation against the Warrior defense for the game winning bucket.

Henry Middlebrooks paced FPD with 15 points, including three made 3-pointers. Titus Moore totaled 13 points and also connected on three shot from downtown. C.J. Harris and Smith finished with 11 points as well.

Clarence Jackson finished with a game-high 16 points for the Warriors. Derrick Wilcher pumped in 14 points.

Grable and Geter III totaled 13 and 10, respectively.

The game featured nine ties and 14 lead changes.

The Vikings, who earned their highest win over a ranked opponent since joining the GHSA (Wilkinson County is no. 3 in the Score Atlanta/AJC Poll), will now await for an at-large bid to the GHSA Class-A Private Boys State Tournament.
