Viking Softball Finishes Week 3-0

FPD – What a week it was for the Viking Softball team. They played three games in three days and crushed their opponents (Stratford Academy, Crawford County and Wilkinson County) by a combined score 45-5. Every game played this week invoked the GHSA mercy rule and the Lady Vikings also picked up their first and second region wins of the 2017 season.

Offensively the bats exploded for 30 hits with almost half of those going for extra base hits and included a solo home run by Moe Register against Stratford. Leading the way offensively for the Vikings was Senior Sydnee Sconyers, who finished the week 6 for 10  of which 3 were doubles while driving in 8 runs. Junior Karsen Ochs and Freshman Olivia Parker both would go 6 for 9 each over the three game span and Senior Sadie Frame would drive in 4 runs herself. In all three games every Viking would reach base at least once contributing to the success of the teams accomplishments this week and conclude the week hitting .411 over the three games.

The pitching for the Vikings was just as dominate. Not only did Junior Karsen Ochs and Freshman Olivia Parker dominate the opposing pitchers from the batters box, but they also dominated the opposing hitters from the rubber. Together the tandem would combine to limit the opponents hitters to 5 hits and 5 runs during the three game span. Ochs would also finish the week with 10 strikeouts with 8 of those coming against Stratford in the Vikings 10-2 win on Tuesday night.

The Vikings were originally scheduled to head to Savannah this weekend to play Calvary Day and Richmond Hill, however with the declared state of emergency along the Georgia coast due to the forecasted impact of Hurricane Irma those two games have been cancelled.

The softball team now will look to keep the momentum going heading into next week as they attempt to split the season series against region foe Mount De Sales Tuesday September 12 at home with a 5:55pm start time.
