Viking Softball Takes Down Mount De Sales in 7th

The Vikings had runners on second and third with two outs and senior Sadie Frame was facing a 1-2 count  when she delivered the game winning hit driving in freshman Olivia Parker for the 4-3 win over Mount De Sales.

MDS jumped out early in the region game with 2 runs in the top of the 1st, but the Vikings would answer back in the bottom half of the 1st when Parker singled driving in junior Karsen Ochs. Ochs, who was the starting pitcher for the Vikings, would shut down MDS in the top half of the second and the Vikings would tie the game in the bottom of the inning when Abbey Surles walked on four straight pitches with the bases loaded.

The game would remained tied at two until the top of the 4th when MDS would steal a run on a pass ball with two outs taking a 3-2 lead. The Vikings wouldn’t threaten again until the bottom of the 6th when the late inning drama began.

Frame, who represented the tying run, would lead off the bottom of the 6th with a walk and then proceed to steal second to get into scoring position. Sophomore Cardin Weaver, was a perfect example of a true teammate giving herself up by bunting Frame to third. That bunt allowed Frame to score and tie the game on Ochs sacrifice fly.

Ochs would again send the MDS hitters down in order in the top half of the 7th inning with the game still tied at 3 when the fun began again.

Parker would get on base with walk and advance to second on senior Caylee Ann Sutton’s single with one out. MDS would get senior Sydnee Sconyers to fly out for out number two of the inning.

Now the Vikings were down to their last out before heading to extra innings with runners on first and second with the game tied at 3. Frame stepped into the box and took the first pitch for a called strike. The second pitch would get by the MDS catcher allowing the runners to advance a base. Frame would then take the 1-1 pitch for another called strike. The senior now faced a 1-2 count with 2-outs, but she was unfazed by the pressure. The next pitch would be lined past a diving third baseman for MDS scoring Parker for the game winning run.

With the win they avenged an earlier 12-0 loss this season to MDS and evened their region record up at 3-3. More importantly they picked up 17 big points in the GHSA Private School Power Rankings where currently they are ranked 6th with 9.26 points.

The Viking Softball team will be  at home again today for senior night against Wilkinson County with a first pitch scheduled for 5:00 p.m. and on the road Wednesday in a non-region game at Rutland before returning home Thursday to face Tattnall in their final regular season region game.
