Fall Recap: Cross Country Teams Meet Goals in 2017

Both FPD Cross Country teams at the beginning of the season set their sights on Carrollton where the GHSA annually holds the state cross-country championships, and they both accomplished it. The boys qualified for the third time in the last four years and the girls qualified for the first time since 2014.

The FPD Boys Cross-Country Team put together a memorable season this fall on the trail. They would not finish outside the top 10 prior to the state championship and in eight of their ten races this season they would finish in the top four. The boys were led this season by two underclassmen, Freshman Jack Beeland and Sophomore Jack Hardy who consistently finished among the top runners in their meets.  However, all five of the top FPD runners, which also included Senior Cooper Martin, Sophomores Camden Lashley and Wyatt Hicks would have averages under 19 minutes by the state championship. The boys finished the 2017 season ranked 13th in Class-A.

The FPD Girls Cross-Country Team had not competed at the state meet since 2014, but with their hard work and determination they would get back to state ending a two-year absence. During the season, the Lady Vikings would defeat every county-wide school at least once, and finish in the top eight in every race but two. They were led on the trail a lot this season by Juniors Mia Ferro, and Mary Jayne Bonfim, but freshman Reese Lefholz would finish 11th overall in the Area-1 Meet prior which led all Lady Vikings prior to the state meet. The girls concluded the 2017 season ranked 16th in Class-A.
