Fall Recap: Lady Viking Softball Makes It 5 Straight

Heading into the 2017 season not many outsiders gave the Lady Vikings Softball Team much of a chance to get back to Columbus for the 5th straight year much less make it to the Final Four, but these girls were determined to prove their doubters wrong and they did just that.

“From day one of practice, our coaches drilled into our minds that we had one thing to accomplish this season, “Defend the “P”, said senior Sadie Frame. All season these girls worked and continued to work on improving each game to put themselves in a position to make a run at returning to Columbus.  Coach Denny Bryant contributed his team’s success this season to their attitude. “Those girls loved each other and they played for each other. They had the goal of returning to Columbus and they knew it was going to take everyone being on the same page to accomplish it,” said Bryant. “Watching them celebrate after sweeping Darlington in the playoffs to get back to Columbus was one of the best moments for me as a coach. Their investment in practices had paid off.”

Perhaps though their greatest achievement this season wasn’t just returning to Columbus, but battling their way into the Final Four. After losing the opening game of the Elite Eight in Columbus to Tattnall 5-1, the Lady Vikings would return the following day facing elimination and compete in 21 innings in one day. They would shut out region foe Mt. De Sales 4-0 and Prince Avenue 8-0 behind exceptional pitching from Junior Karsen Ochs advancing to the Final Four.  This team battled until the end sticking together even when others outside the program doubted them.

They would receive a first round bye and home game in the GHSA Class-A Playoffs, and advance to the Final Four for the fifth straight year. The Lady Vikings finished the season ranked fourth in Class-A.
