Saturday afternoon the Lady Vikings Soccer Club continued their season long domination of opponents with their smothering defense shutting out Athens Academy 2-0 for their fifth straight playoff match shutout and their first state title since the 2012 season.

The game time temperature at was hovering near 90 degrees with the on-field-turf temperature in the triple digits, but the Lady Vikings showed no signs of fatigue in either half. They constantly overwhelmed the Lady Spartans and for most of the match had possession keeping the pressure constant on Athens Academy. Sophomore Maggie Davis got the Lady Vikings on the board with 14:08 remaining in the first half and Junior Jansyn Samples scored the second goal early in the second half to give the Lady Vikings an insurance goal.

The Lady Vikings outscored their opponents 23-0 during the playoffs and completed a historic season undefeated with a record of 23-0.  The eight Lady Viking Seniors returned to the place of their last loss, which was the state championship match last season against Wesleyan with a decisive performance against the then number ranked number one Athens Academy Spartans.  The seniors leave with a two-year-unbeaten streak at home, a championship banner, and a season for the ages.  On the season they outscored their opponents 170-6.

“We did not want to feel how we felt last year,” senior Sadie Frame said. “We wanted to come off knowing that we won 23 straight games and didn’t have a single loss. And that’s what we did, that’s what we accomplished today.”

“It’s been a long time coming,” said Head Coach Joshua Trieste, whose team last won the Class A title in 2012. “I’ve entered this game as coach undefeated a couple times and not won it, so, these girls just made my season.”

This championship was Trieste’s third GHSA Title (’11,’12 & 18)., the second state title this athletic year (Clay Target Shooting) and the 46th overall state title for Viking Athletics.
